To automobile drivers in the Western Hemisphere, the red octagon instantly communicates STOP. To the budding mathematician, the simple triangle, known in Greek as ‘delta,’ means change. A red heart puts us in mind of love. And in the early decades of the twenty-first century, the new language of emojis promises to give us a new language of pictographic symbols. The examples above occupy the neutral-to-positive end of the symbol spectrum, which may mean that we subtly, perhaps imperceptibly, benefit from the experience of perceiving them. But on the other end of the symbol spectrum are other, not so positive symbols. The skull-and-crossbones, for example, communicates danger of one kind or another. The most notoriously recognizable symbol coming out of World War Two, and possibly the most notorious symbol in history, is the Nazi Swastika. A little-known fact of that infamous symbol is that its origins are Hindu, and its meaning originally was peace. Its orientation was inverted from the more familiar use by the Third Reich, which means that the Nazis literally turned it oppositely in order to communicate the opposite of peace.

In life, we have many choices. And our choices have consequences. If we choose to ignore the red octagonal STOP sign, we risk a violent collision at best. If we were to wear the Nazi Swastika in public, we would run the risk of confrontation by people who understand the death and destruction it ushered in during the 1930s and 1940s.
