Have you ever had one of those days where the world just seemed awful to you? For the woman behind the PEACE AND LIFE symbol, before it was created, she began to have lots of these types of days. From battling feminism in high school, marching for civil rights in college, and bearing witness to the shocking attacks by al-Qaeda and Osama bin Laden on 9/11, it would be understandable that the men and women of her generation could lose hope of a brighter future. As she reached her peak of fear, she scribbled down our unique symbol on a piece of paper: an upwards peace sign with “arms” to the sky, and a biblical life symbol with arms pointing towards the ground. This symbol generates the idea of hope and that one person believing in peace and life can change the world.
Spirit of Huntington Art Center
