Winning World Peace

Winning World Peace

peace-for-the-worldWhile our world has its fair share of war in its history, it has just as many incredible instances of historic diplomacy and peace. Work toward peace is extremely time-consuming, complex and very difficult for both sides, requiring some level of compromise on both sides. It is easy to remember all of the instances of combat and war in our world, but also very important to remember the many instances of world governments working tirelessly for peace. Here are some of the most notable instances of peaceful victories:

  1. South Africa’s Apartheid: Nelson Mandela and the African National Party made an agreement with the South African government in 1993 that ended the system of apartheid, a system of racial segregation.
  2. Bosnian War: In 1995, Bosnia, Serbia and Croatia agreed to the Dayton Accords, which ended one of the world’s most tragic conflicts in the history of the world where as many as 100,000 died (many as victims of genocide and war crimes) and more than 2 million people were displaced.
  3. Egyptian/Israeli Peace Treaty: In 1979, US President Jimmy Carter helped negotiate a peace treaty between Egypt and Israel that ended 30 years of war between the two countries.
  4. Chapultepec Peace Accords: In 1992, the decade old civil war in El Salvador ended with the Chapultepec Peace Accord. This violent period in this country’s history was marked with death, destruction and economic ruin. Finding peace for this nation was difficult but this peace accord was a critical first step.
  5. End to Guatemala’s Civil War: Guatemala’s civil war was brought to an end in 1996 when leaders signed a peace deal that ended the deadliest civil war in Central America.

Each of these are examples of victories of world peace and saved many thousands of lives. Leaders found ways to reach across the table toward compromise and put peace and life above war. There are many ways that individuals can contribute to world peace – on a smaller scale. One small way to support world peace is by supporting peace at home.
